About Kathryn

10 Things To Know About Kathryn Vercillo:

1. She’s been a writer as long as she can remember and would probably write even if she never earned a dime from it but she has getting paid to be a full-time writer for about five years now. She co-owns and operates a professional media company called MoKa House.

2. Kathryn is originally from Tucson, Arizona and has only good things to say about her hometown but she moved to San Francisco because it always felt like home.

3. Although she is no longer “just a visitor” to San Francisco, Kathryn loves many of the tourist destinations that make this place so appealing to visitors. She’s been known to buy books at City Lights and eat Chinese food at House of Nanking, dance too late into the night fueled by the strong drinks in The Castro and has spent more than one day lost in the thrift stores and aisles of Amoeba Records in the Haight.

4. She admits to having an addiction to coffee which fuels her writing and her mind. She supports it most often with trips to North Beach cafes. She claims to have no other major vices.

5. Kathryn is a music journalist who is well tied-in to the local music scene. She loves supporting the work of all sorts of other creative people and does what she can with her writing skills to promote others. Much of this work can be seen through her San Francisco arts and music blog, San Fran Voice.

6. Her hair was varying shades of blue for over two years, because she liked it and because - since she works for herself - it could be. It’s also been other shades - usually some variation of red - but at the time of this writing is just natural brown. Her eyes, however, change regularly as she has a preference for colored contacts, usually blue.

7. Kathryn is the author of Ghosts of San Francisco which shares not only the reported history of hauntings in the Bay Area but also the general history of the people who have lived here over time. She is just wrapping up her second book, Ghosts of Alcatraz. She won’t say whether or not she believes in them.

8. Her most frequent wish is that she could live a hundred other lives parallel to the one that she has chosen. If she could, she’d be an intellectual property lawyer, a Broadway theater actress and acrobat, a computer forensics expert, a solitary world traveler and a hundred other things. Since she can’t possibly be all of those things, she lives them vicariously by being a writer.

9. When not writing, she is most frequently found reading. She’ll read pretty much anything but she won’t necessarily finish it. She’s also known to spend time beating the current high score of Ms. Pacman at the local arcade museum, watching television crime show series on DVD and talking to strangers who others dismiss as crazy.

10. The word most often used to describe Kathryn is “passionate”. She is passionate about her work and passionate about her love for the people in her life. But more than anything, she is passionately in love with San Francisco.
